More than 2 thousand Ethiopians accused of participating in riots

More than 2,000 people were charged in connection with the murder of Oromo singer Khachal Hundessa and the ensuing violence. It is reported by BBC Amharic. The Prosecutor General of Ethiopia, Gideon Timotheus, said that there were politicians among the accused, but clarified that none of them had been detained for their political activities. Recall that as a result of the outbreak of violence that began after the murder of Khachalu, more than 160 people died. Many were injured, and property worth several billion US dollars was also destroyed. Timotheus added that cases will be considered in different jurisdictions, since violence has become widespread. According to the news agency, the popular musician and activist Khachalu was killed on June 29, which caused national unrest. His songs were dedicated to the rights of the Oromo people, Ethiopia's largest ethnic group, and became anthems of protests that led to the resignation of the country's former prime minister in 2018.
