Most US citizens want to choose a president in a new way

A large majority of US citizens are in favor of amending the basic law and abolishing the electoral college, The Hill reports with reference to the results of a sociological survey on September 24. So, according to a Gallup study, 61% of US citizens support the transition to direct elections. Compared to 2016, this figure increased by 12%. Such a change in the system of choosing the president of the country is advocated primarily by supporters of the Democratic Party (89%), as well as those who support independent candidates (68%). Among those who identify themselves as the Republican Party, only 23% of respondents indicate the need to change the electoral system. The Gallup survey was conducted among 1,019 adult US citizens from August 31 to September 13. Its error is 4 percentage points. Recall that in the 2016 elections, the former first lady Hillary Clinton won the number of votes cast for the candidate, but her rival Donald Trump received the majority of the electoral votes. A similar development has been observed in the history of the United States more than once. In particular, in the defeat of the popular vote, the former George W. Bush, Jr., who won, like Trump, in the votes of the electors, became the head of the White House in 2000.
