Ex-head of the junta in Niger intends to run for president

The former head of the Niger military junta, General Salu Djibo, will run for president in this year's elections. This is reported by Air Force Africa. According to journalists of the television and radio company, General Djibo was announced on Sunday, June 28, as a candidate from the Peace-Justice-Progress (PJP) party. Recall that Djibo led the military junta that overthrew President Mahamada Tanja in February 2010, after he tried to stay in power after the expiration of his two-year term. General Djibo returned power to civilian rule after Mahamadou Issoufou won the subsequent elections. The general resigned from the army in 2019. He hopes to succeed President Issoufou, who is constitutionally prohibited from holding this post for a third term.
